Practical Guideline #9. Don't Eat Foods Made with Refined Carbs
Most refined carbs are cereal grains, with cereal grains usually being either wheat or corn. These grain-based carbs include breads, bagels, muffins, pastas, tortillas, and pizza dough. Sometimes soy, rice, and potato flours are used to make breads and pasta. |

Too much stevia can leave an aftertaste.
Range and Appearance
Stevia is an annual and sometimes perennial shrub native to Brazil and Paraguay but cultivated in highland tropics elsewhere. It grows to about 3 feet in height. Its leaves are opposite and toothed, born on a wandlike, hairy stem. The flowers are white, hermaphroditic, and tubular. The plant prefers moist soil, a humid climate, and plenty of sunshine. |

Kunin: We are using stevia. Stevia's one of the ingredients we have.
Mike: Oh, it is?
Kunin: Yes. That's why we have very little fructose in there with a hint of stevia, as a means to get that balance. We've got 36 key nutrients in there -- a gram dose of TNG, a gram of glycine, a gram of vitamin C. The interesting thing is that, when you're doing a supplement drink that's this nutrient-rich, you have to get the very best ingredients, or the taste itself can be just horrific. You also have to be able to do this without loading it up with sugar. |

I recall talking to an author of a very popular health book who told me she didn't include a section on stevia because she thought the FDA might confiscate the book if she mentioned the herb!
Incredible. What has America come to if people won't stand up against a corrupt, tyrannical government? The answer is simple: An enslaved nation that will devolve into a tyrannical dictatorship. The FDA already operates a medical dictatorship, complete with censorship, oppression of information and intimidation campaigns against those who attempt to speak out against the agency. They use the natural herb stevia. And somehow they manage to make even egg protein (which is usually rather boring) taste good. I know because I slammed three sample cups of this egg protein for breakfast one morning at the trade show (I couldn't find any healthy food at the hotels, so I headed straight for Jay's booth for some quality protein to get my day started).
Jay Robb is best known for whey protein and egg white protein, both of which come in an assortment of flavors such as strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. |

Guideline 6. Avoid Fast-Food and Chain Restaurants
Here s why: With few exceptions, these restaurants serve up everything that's bad for you: foods rich in refined carbohydrates, sugars, and the unhealthiest fats. These foods could be labeled "obesity in a bag" or "diabetes in a bag" because they contribute so much to the risk of obesity and diabetes. |

Dr. Liers: Why is that?
Mike: Gastrointestinal effects.
Dr. Liers: There are different levels for gastrointestinal effects. There is an adaptation process to xylitol typically. If you go and look at the literature -- you can take 75 grams a day before you might start getting gastrointestinal discomfort. Mannitol is 25 grams. |

Using too much stevia makes foods taste bitter.
If you purchase stevia, make certain that it is a pure product. Maltodextrin is sometimes added to the lower-priced stevia products, but maltodextrin and maltose are the two carbohydrates that have the highest glycemic index of all: 150. It is a better idea to pay a little more for the pure stevia.
Additives: Over the past two decades numerous studies have documented the adverse effects on behavior triggered by food additives. |

HEALTHY, BUT HARD TO FIND, SWEETENERS
First, it's worth mentioning that there are other great ways to sweeten and also do damage control besides using those two foods. stevia, for example, is an herb that many people love as a sweetener, but it's just not widely enough available to be included, and it doesn't have real strong positive benefits—it's just not bad for you! My favorite sweetener in the world is Xylitol, and it does actually have health benefits—but it's a sugar alcohol, and only technically a "food." Hence, it's not on the list. |

If you often have to work for long stretches and don't have time for a nutritious lunch or dinner, keep some healthful snacks handy. These snacks might include slices of deli meats (chicken, turkey, beef, or ham), deli cheese (as long as you are not allergic to dairy products), or nuts (unsalted peanuts, cashews, pecans, or almonds). It won't take more than a minute to eat some of these foods. You might keep a can of tuna or sardines or a couple of apples handy as well. |
