How about making zero-sugar cereals with stevia as the only sweetener? I'd be floored, and I'd rave endlessly about General Mills if they went straight to natural herbal sweeteners.
Of course, to do that, the FDA has to give up protecting the Nutrasweet monopoly and actually legalize stevia as a safe food ingredient, and that's another story altogether. It seems to take an act of God just to get the FDA to do anything for the public good these days, so don't expect miracles any time soon on this front. |

But getting back to these Spirutein products, their product line is great if you buy the unsweetened products, because you can sweeten it yourself using stevia. They create a fantastic base for any kind of blend. One of my favorite blends is to buy the Simply Natural Spirutein Peaches and Creme flavor, throw in some soy milk, and a heavy dose of stevia, and a large scoop of spirulina powder. Mix that up and enjoy. It's a delicious drink. |

People who are dry, cold, and spacey can benefit from good-quality sweet foods, such as fruits, whole grains, and sweet herbs such as anise, fennel, licorice, and stevia.
Pungent
Pungent, or spicy, is warming and dispersing and stimulates the lungs and large intestine. It induces perspiration, stimulates the nerves, relieves nerve pain, clears chi stagnation, promotes circulation, and imparts a glow to the skin. It also stimulates hydrochloric acid production and thus aids digestion. Most pungent herbs contain some sort of essential oils that move internal energy to the surface. |

Refuses to legalize stevia, the safe, natural herbal sweetener that's used virtually everywhere else in the world. The agenda? Protect the profits of aspartame and other chemical sweeteners.
Openly allows the mass poisoning of the public with cancer-causing food additives such as sodium nitrite.
Refuses to enforce its own laws regarding unsafe chemical toxins in personal care products, allowing perfume and lotion companies to continue poisoning the public with cancer-causing chemicals that don't even have to be listed on the label, nor proven safe. |

You may also wish to learn about the sweet herbal supplement stevia, which millions of people throughout South America and Asia have used as a sweetener for years. Worst-case scenario, add small amounts of maple syrup or raw, washed, organic cane sugar in crystalline form, but please do so only if you do not have medical reasons such as hypoglycemia to avoid them. And please note that many people are just too sensitive to consume any sweeteners at all.

There's a whole article on that subject and how the FDA is actually protecting the market for artificial chemical sweeteners by enforcing current regulations that don't allow food manufacturers to use stevia. Companies can use stevia in nutritional supplement products, because they aren't foods, but that's a different story. So here in the Organic Food Bar, they are using agave nectar, which is an outstanding choice, perhaps the best choice they could have turned to in this food bar.

Plus there's a little bit of stevia in it.
Dr. Weiss: Yes, there's enough stevia to freshen the flavor up. The wheatgrass and spirulina were both things that we considered putting in for a long time. The challenge was finding sources that were clean enough free of metals and other substances. Another challenge was covering up the taste. We were able to keep the nutritional content on par with our competitors, but we didn't need to make it taste bad.

Animal studies suggest effectiveness in fertility reduction and diuresis, but few human studies are available. stevia has also been tested as a spasmolytic, antibiotic, and as an adjunct in vein surgery.
Antidiabetic and Sweetening Effects: The use of the drug as a nonealoric sweetener is based upon the glycosidal diterpenes present: stevioside and rebaudioside A. Rebaudioside A is even sweeter than stevioside (Tanaka, 1997; Ishikawa et al, 1991; Yamamato et al, 1985; Planas & Kuc, 1968). Stevioside is composed of three glucose molecules and a diterpenic carboxylic alcohol (aglycone). |

People now use the new stevia product for lemonade and in cereal. They're finding it has a very nice taste to it. That's been a popular line. That's really the only product in the line that's not in the under-the-tongue format.
Mike: You wouldn't want a lot of stevia under the tongue like that.

Compared to other sweet plant extracts stevia rabaudiana is sweeter than Thaladiantha grosvenorii and Abrus precatorius (Jakinovich & Moon, 1990).
Hypotensive Effects: Pure stevioside has caused bradycardia and hypotension in humans and rats (Melis, 1996). Stevio-side's action on mean arterial pressure and renal function is similar to that of a calcium antagonist such as verapamil (Melis, 1996; Melis & Sainati, 1991). |
| Leaves, Stem, and Root: stevia rebaudiana is a semishrub that grows up to 30 cm high. The leaves are sessile, 3 to 4 cm long with an elongate-lanceolate or spatulate, blunt-tipped lamina. The leaves are serrate from the middle to the tip and entire below. The upper surface of the leaf is slightly glandular pubescent. The stem is weakly downy-pubescent at the bottom and woody. The tough rhizome has slightly branching roots.
Characteristics: All plant parts taste intensively sweet.
Habitat: The plant is indigenous to Paraguay. |
| Hypertension
The antihypertensive effect of crude stevioside obtained from leaves of stevia rebaudiana on patients with untreated mild hypertension was investigated. Patients were submitted to a placebo phase for 4 weeks. Participants selected in this phase were randomly assigned to receive either capsules containing placebo during 24 weeks or crude stevioside 3.75 mg/kg/day (7 weeks), 7.5 mg/kg/day (11 weeks), and 15.0 mg/kg/day (6 weeks). Systolic and diastolic BP decreased (P<0.05) during the treatment with crude stevioside, but a similar effect was observed in the placebo group. |

Food choices may consist of nutritious wholesome foods, such as oatmeal (porridge) or any other hot cereal, (but check for a wheat or gluten allergy) Eat your cereal with expeller-pressed coconut oil or unsalted butter; unrefined sea salt; rice, hemp, oat or almond milk; and perhaps a little maple syrup, stevia, agave syrup, raw honey or xylitol sugar for sweetening. This makes a nourishing breakfast. Wetabix or toasted whole-wheat bread (finely ground) with butter, is a good choice, too. Other hot cereals include cream of buckwheat, cream of rice, millet, grits, quinoa and other such grains. |
| Stevia has zero calories, so it cannot serve as food for cancer cells. Xylitol, contains calories (about 40% less than sugar), but its slow release into the blood gives it a much lower glycemic index. If taken in moderation, xylitol is unlikely to pose a problem. However, refined carbohydrates, such as pasta, white bread, pastries and cakes are quickly broken down into glucose and act just as refined sugar does.

Another new sweetener looks promising: tagatose (Naturlose). It is a low-calorie, natural sugar found in milk that has just attained GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, allowing it to be included in foods as a sweetener. Tagatose is a sugar molecule, similar to glucose, that is poorly absorbed. It also appears to be able to actually block the absorption of other sugars, including glucose. |

Caution: Beware of an elaborate gimmick by a global, multimillion dollar marketing company that claims: "Medical research has discovered that eight glyconutrient sugars are needed at the cellular level for optimum immune function." The idea is to take expensive supplements that contain these eight sugars, which are supposedly missing in your diet. |
